024: Does Mindfulness Impact Peak Performance? W/ Christian StrakaFeb 25, 2021
On this episode of High Flow Lifestyle, I talk with Christian Straka about mindfulness and flow’s impact on peak performance, and his 3 trainable skills for accessing flow consistently.
Christian Straka has developed a unique approach to mindset training through methodologies for applying evidence-based mindfulness techniques in sports. Christian has been practicing mindfulness for many years and is also now teaching and coaching mindfulness.
For the past decade, his focus turned to mindset training for peak performance through evidence-based mindfulness skill development, which he incorporates in his function as the Global Mindset Coach for adidasRunners as well as with his personal and corporate clients.
Christian focuses on building 3 skills among the numerous triggers for accessing the flow state.
1) The ability to pay attention to what you want for any length of time, to a point where you lose your sense of time and don’t even realize it’s happening anymore.
2) The ability to really notice subtleties and be very clear on what it is you are experiencing in the moment.
3) The ability to move through a certain situation without resisting anything that comes up, like fear, anxiety...
These skills are trainable in combination with intentionality. When you are experiencing a heightened state of those skills, you are experiencing a flow state. This can begin to happen quite frequently actually.
He focuses on using and developing these skills for your current and future performance. The strategy can apply to any type of performance, whether it's art or something else, but he gears it towards people coming at it with a sports mentality.
He learned the hard way the importance of mindfulness and connecting to flow. It was frustrating in the beginning because he would be in flow for a few minutes but couldn’t figure out how to get back into it or stretch the flow experience.
Many people are living in the grey area of flow:
“It is extremely frustrating when you know what it can be like, and you have absolutely zero intellectual understanding of how to get there...”
After struggling with this in-and-out phase for many years he realized there is certain intentionality to how you are using certain intellectual skills. A training plan and system needs to be put in place.
“I want to develop the skills and not be at the mercy of my mind anymore.”
