027: Finding Flow Through Intentionality in Our Health, Wealth, and Relationships w/ Eric Partaker

podcast Mar 15, 2021

On this episode of High Flow Lifestyle, I talk with Eric Partaker about finding flow through intentionality and using what he calls his “Dream Team Practice,” exploring the 3 most important domains of life are: our health, our wealth, and our relationships.

As a Peak Performance Expert, Eric Partaker helps CEOs, entrepreneurs, and leaders reach their full potential, become better leaders, and build better businesses. Within his approach he draws from his time advising Fortune 50 CEOs at McKinsey, his experience helping build up Skype’s multi-billion dollar success story, and his own entrepreneurial journeys – together with behavioral science from Stanford University, as well as techniques from the worlds of elite sports and the military, areas where peak performance is key.

On top of numerous awards such as being named “CEO of the Year” at the 2019 UK Business Excellence Awards, he is also the author of the new bestselling book The 3 Alarms: A Simple System to Transform Your Health, Wealth, and Relationships Forever.

Eric’s superpower is his determination to succeed, while at the same time accepting that the path is nonlinear. It’s similar to the Pareto Principle, the 80/20 rule. When you understand that it’s not linear, that helps you prioritize.

We are social beings and we need social support. Our partner can really help balance our days.

Sleep and exercise are essential elements to staying in flow and having balance in your life.

“One of the biggest benefits that I have, in terms of creating flow, is the way I approach intentionality.”

“I start each day with a practice that I call the “Dream Team Practice.” “I’m not alone on a daily basis, I’ve got 3 helpers. I think that the 3 most important domains of life are: our health, our wealth, and our relationships. I have a best self-identity in each of those domains.”

I give the identity a name, for example the pro-athlete who represents health, and at the beginning of the day I think of one thing that can serve as evidence of that identity. I write that in my calendar, and it might be something like do 700 calories on the stationary bike.

Go through the other 2 best self-identities as well, and make sure you meet those daily goals. Eric sets 3 alarms a day as little reminders of each, such as being the best dad in the world, and when the alarm goes off, he checks that he has done something to meet those goals.

Abraham Maslow: only 2% of people operate at their true potential.

Intuition -

“You have to respect intuition, because it’s there for a reason and it’s there to protect you, but sometimes it can be misunderstood.”

When you’re walking in an unsafe area or there seems to be something that you don’t trust about someone, trust that gut feeling.

But when you are starting something new and you get a little feeling in your gut about doubt, then more often than not it’s based on fear and it’s your subconscious saying, “ooh, you might fail.” That’s when you need to step into the discomfort.

Steven Kotler says that flow happens when we’re just outside of our comfort zone, 4% to be exact. It’s when we’re feeling challenged but not overwhelmed.

“Don’t let your intuition get in the way of your growth.”

Things may be uncomfortable, and your intuition is warning you about it, but you need to step into those things in order to grow.

“stress builds strength”

“Stress isn’t something bad that we should avoid, it’s actually something we should embrace. It’s the path for our growth.”
